It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Stanley Arthur Long just short of his 93rd birthday on April 19, 2024 at the Villages of Tansley Woods in Burlington.
He was born in Sarnia, May 1st 1932 and was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Zella (nee Perry). He was the youngest in a family of three sons (Kenneth, Douglas & Stanley) and one daughter (Marjorie). The family moved from Sarnia to nearby Corunna in the 1930’s where he had many fond memories with his family before returning back to Sarnia with his wife and firstborn son. His Dad ran a garage and commercial supply business, while his Mom an adjacent coffee shop and sandwich bar on Lyndock Street in Corunna.
After public elementary school in Corunna (the same school his granddaughter Melissa attended), Stanley attended high school at Sarnia Collegiate Institute and Technical School (SCITS) in Sarnia. His Dad and uncle helped lay the foundations for the school.
Following graduation, Dad drove bus for a short while before answering an ad for process workers at Dow Chemical. He worked at Dow for the next 39 years, retiring in 1993.
A quiet fellow, he overcame his usual reticence to summon up the courage to introduce himself to Lorraine Dingwell who came to Sarnia from her hometown of Port Huron, Michigan to socialize at the roller skating. Lucky for him and all of us! The two were married on May 18th, 1957, nearly 68 years ago, in Port Huron and built a wonderful, loving life together with their four children: Thomas (Leslie Pace), Brenda (Jim McCormack), Brian and Amanda; eight grandchildren (Melissa (Ryan Martin), Michael (Carolyn Garland), Joshua, Emily (Matt Lambert), Memphis (John Belay), Veronica, Noah (Georgia Pereira) and Jacob and four great-grandchildren, Clark, Walter, Stella and Audrey. He always had a special fondness and love for his daughter-in-laws Yvonne Chapin (Shawn) and Gwen Pettigrew-Long (Victor).
For sixty years, the couple lived happily at 362 Elsfield Crescent with the same closely knit neighbours and friends, including the Stocks, Hodgson and Gignac families. He enjoyed many walks along the river with his wife and family. More recently they moved to Corunna and later Hamilton and Burlington in retirement communities.
Stanley was especially close to his brother-in-law, Thomas Dingwell and his partner Sharon Curtiss. In their younger years we remember them playing catch on the front lawn at Elsfield.
Dad always loved a good meal (and often sweets that weren’t so good for you). In his long, happy retirement he took up golf and enjoyed spending time with his pals. He especially missed being close to his longtime friend Jim Gallie.
We will all treasure the many family trips to celebrate Mom and Dad’s 50th, 55th, 60th and 62nd wedding anniversaries. They loved Disney World and Disney Cruises and the weeks they spent as snowbirds in Venice, Florida. If you measure wealth in love, Stan Long is one of the wealthiest fellows you could imagine and he gave every ounce as much as he received.
