PAUL MASON

October 19, 1955 – April 13, 2017

A man with a big heart, Paul had a love for beauty, people and hard work. On March 25, 2017, he learned that he had extensive cancer throughout his body. Though his life was turned upside down, Paul always held the well-being of others in his mind as he put his affairs in order. As we drove through town, he would point out the homes he had tended over the years and describe what he had planned for the yards in the spring. He remembered each and every client with familiarity and fondness, even as he struggled with coming to terms with having to let them go.

Paul rarely complained, but accepted this change in his life with dignity and a thoughtful composure to be admired. He remembered friends and acquaintances every day throughout his life. He encouraged people to visit without hesitation, his arms and heart open and welcoming right up to his last days. He touched people’s lives with kindness, compassion and generosity.

The journey we travelled with him in the last few weeks has been both surprising and heartbreaking. As his immediate family, we stood beside him every minute of every day, to be with him, to listen to him, and to respect his wishes to the best of our ability. Even now, we strive to keep faith with him as we move forward.

Carol, Anne and Richard were with him in the last few hours of his life. As he passed away, his eyes became peaceful and a smile touched his lips. A truly comforting experience. He was a man, a brother and a friend who will be remembered fondly and with respect for the person who he was.
