Jack Smith

SMITH, John (Jack) - Peacefully, at St. Joseph's Hospice on July 11, 2012, John (Jack) Smith passed in his 82nd year after a brief illness. Survived by his wife Mary of 57 years, children John (Debbie), Kevin (Linda) and Shelley (Campbell), grandchildren Brittany, Jordan, Michael, Tyler and Matthew; brother Neil (Elizabeth), sister-in-law Jean (Ernie) and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by father John and mother Alma (Watson), brother Howard and brother-in-law Howard Hodgson (Margaret). Jack was born and raised in Sarnia and retired in 1986 after 34 years at Imperial Oil. He was an active volunteer in many capacities including the Sarnia Ten Pin Bowling Association, the Bluewater Optimist, and SMAA baseball and youth bowling. He was instrumental in coordinating Gold Bat tournaments hosting players from Puerto Rico, Michigan and throughout Ontario. Jack was inducted into the Lambton County Sports Hall of Fame in 1997 and was recognized by the Sertoma Club for his support of youth sports in Sarnia. In addition, Jack was recognized by the Professional Bowling Association (PBA) for 25 years of participation. An avid sports fan, Jack enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Maple Leafs. His passion was bowling, collecting coins and sports memorabilia, and building airplane models. He loved to travel, play golf, meet his buddies at Tim Hortons for coffee, and sit on his balcony watching boats and ships pass under the Bluewater Bridge. He was his grandchildrens' biggest fan and enjoyed watching them play hockey, baseball and other sports. The family wishes to thank Drs. Sharma, Maddison, Crombeen and the fourth floor nurses at Bluewater Health. Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will be held. Donations may be made to St. Joseph's Hospice and the Canadian Cancer Society in Jack's memory.
