George Stephen Porter of Sarnia died peacefully on May 4th at St. Joseph's Hospice. Born, August 4th 1923, to Charles and Mary (Jones) Porter in Malta, he will be missed by his loving wife of 62 years, Jane (Farrugia), his 3 daughters, the é¢aA"Porter Girlsé¢a, Mabel (Frank Higgins), Brenda (David Bandy), Judy (Ron Crawford). He will be affectionately remembered as Papa George by his grandchildren, Emily (Paul Blunt), Eric (Bonnie Newman), Darcy; Nathan (Meredith Danzig), Kyle; and Great-Grandchildren, Keenan, Christopher & Jessica; Stuart and Simon. He leaves behind many in-laws, nieces and nephews in Canada, U.S.A, Britain, Malta and Australia. He is predeceased by his entire family including 9 siblings, brothers-and-sisters-in-law and son-in-law, Paul Fortney. George was a young Shipwright during WWII employed in His Majesty's Dockyard at Malta. He served with the Home Guard of Malta and was among the island's citizenry, awarded the George Cross for bravery. Son of a British Artilleryman and grandson of a Malta Railway Station Master, George immigrated to Canada in 1948. He worked 36 years with the Canadian National Railway where he received an award for his safety innovations. Several mementos of his woodworking talent remain with his family today. His storytelling, his dry wit and legendary checkers matches kept family and friends challenged! But now, after a long life well lived, we say farewell and wish him é¢aA"Peaceé¢a¦ Perfect Peaceé¢a. George's family acknowledges the kindness of friends, neighbours, and his CN colleagues, Jim Houston, Dr.Canning, the dedication of our local CCAC, the health professionals who crossed his path, including Georgie & Sue, Jane, Judy, Barb and Cindy, Carol and Melissa, the Bluewater Health Lab, Emergency and Palliative Care Staff and the St. Joseph's Hospice staff and volunteers with special thanks to Dr. Glen Madison. We recognize that é¢aEit took a village' to bring dad kindly to his deserved resting place. We repeat a kind thank-you and his oft' used farewellé¢a¦ Cheerio and take it easy! A kind and quiet man of few needs, George's family invites you to celebrate his life through donations to St. Joseph's Hospice or a charity of your choice. We welcome you to join during a visitation at D.J. Robb Funeral home on Thursday 7-9pm. A private family funeral will take place with interment at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery.
