Douglas Kirton

Suddenly on July 9th, 2012 at the age of 80, Douglas Kirton passed away. Doug spent many of his early years as a member of the RCSCC é¢a‚A"Repulseé¢a‚ as a sea cadet, from 1944-1950. Later he became an officer 1962-1965, and then commanding officer 1966-1969. In 1968 Doug was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, receiving his commission from Roland Michener, Governor General of Canada. For two seasons he sailed the Great Lakes for the Upper Lakes and St. Lawrence Transportation System, sailing aboard grain boats, the PIG Barge 137, and Steamer Victorious. Doug was employed by Dow Chemical Canada Inc. from 1951 until he retired in 1988. His last years were spent in marketing and contract business. He was also a chartered member of the Dow Presidents Honour Club. Doug was a past director and life member of the Sarnia and district 10 pin bowling association. As a member of the Sarnia Borough of the Philatelic Society, he collected stamps world wide. He was a devoted Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leaf fan, he watched and listened to every game possible. In later years he spent summers at his cottage, on Chandos Lake in the Kawartha's. Driving his 1971 Cutlass on sunny days was always a highlight. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Barbara of 52 years, to Europe and the USA. He liked his computer, and would spend many hours é¢a‚A"Skypingé¢a‚ his Moscow and London families. Doug was predeceased by his Father Watson (1982), his only sibling Mae Vercauteren (1984), Mother Carrie (nee Smith) (1988), and the love of his life Barbara Ann Kirton (nee Edwards) (2009). He is survived by his eldest son Stephen and wife Karen (of Moscow), daughter Kathi Christiansen and husband Frank (of London, ON) and youngest son Jeffery (of London, ON). Survived by grandchildren Mark and fianc郩 Nicole, Derek, Stuart, Julia (of Bridgenorth, ON) Jessica and fianc郩 Ken (of Ilderton, ON) and Meggie (of London, ON). Along with his beloved wife, Doug and Barb will make their last trip to the cottage where they will remain together forever. There will be a permanent marker in Lakeview Cemetery. A celebration of Doug's life will be held from the Chapel of the D.J. Robb Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Friday, July 13th at 1:00 pm. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday, July 12th afternoon and evening from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Sympathy may be expressed through memorial donations to a Charity of Choice.
