KEDDY, Doris (“Rog”) Elaine - Sarnia has lost a great lady with the passing of Doris “Rog” Keddy. She died peacefully of natural causes, at Marshall Gowland Manor, on March 13, 2019. She was 93 years old.
Rog Keddy was born on September 17, 1925, in the family farmhouse in Milestone, SK, 35 miles (57km) south of Regina, SK, to her proud parents, Maysel and Worth Rogers. She grew up on the wheat farm and experienced great love from her family, as well as hardships faced by all farmers, who depended upon good weather and rainfall for abundant harvests. Her early life on the prairie contributed to her resourceful and resilient spirit.
After high school, Rog enrolled in nursing at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina. Soon after graduating as an RN, she moved to Toronto and became an airline stewardess with Trans Canada Airlines (Air Canada).
On a fateful day in Toronto, she met her future husband, Douglas Keddy, who was a traveling shoe salesman with Bata Shoes. The couple married in 1950 and soon moved to Sarnia, where they opened Douglas Keddy Shoes on Christina St.
Through their hard work and dedication, Douglas Keddy Shoes became a success and is still much missed by many Sarnians who shopped there for decades.
Throughout her life, Rog was asked about her unique first name. Her given name was Doris, but she preferred her nickname, “Rog,” the short form of her maiden name, Rogers. When she married Doug, she became known as Rog Keddy.
Rog was an avid golfer and curler and enjoyed playing the card game, Euchre, with her husband and friends. She was an active and wonderful mother to her two girls.
Her greatest challenge in life was when she suffered a stroke at the young age of 52. After months of intensive rehab, she resumed a busy and active life, a true testament to her stamina and courageous spirit.
Rog now joins her late husband, Douglas Keddy, re-united in their grand love together over their 57 years of marriage.
She is predeceased by her parents, Maysel and Worth Rogers, by her brother, Donald Rogers, and sister, Helen Bahen MacKenzie.
Rog is survived by her daughters, Barbara Keddy (Bill Dowling), Tricia Slipacoff (Lawry), and by her grandchildren, Jeff Burke (Sarah), Lindsay Cournoyer (Jesse), and Douglas Slipacoff (Christina.) She will be sadly missed by her great grandchildren, Nathaniel and Samuel Burke, and Hayden and Paige Cournoyer.
Rog is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She had a very special bond with her niece, Susan Brearley, of Point Edward, ON.
Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the D. J. Robb Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 102 N. Victoria St., Sarnia, ON, N7T 5W9. Rog requested that no funeral or memorial service be held. Sympathy may be expressed by sending a donation in memory of Rog Keddy, to Marshall Gowland Manor, 749 Devine St., Sarnia, ON N7T 1X3 or by making a donation online at www.lambtoncares.ca/donate.
