MONK, CLIFFORD GEORGE - Died peacefully on Wednesday morning October 14th, 2009. Survived by Carmel, his beloved wife of 63 years, his daughter Sue Yost, and his son Charles (Miriam). He was the proud grandfather of Sheri (Chris Brine), Trevor Yost, Lianne (Trevor Johansen), Katie (Eric Dobkin), Emily, Brittany and Dakota Monk. Clifford was born in London, England on October 10, 1923. Fiercely proud of his country, he left high school to join the RAF in 1940. After several months preliminary training in England, he went to Canada for his advanced training and gained his wings in October 1941, returning to England in March 1942. He flew combat missions in Sicily, North Africa, Malta, Italy and Holland with 41 and 247 Squadrons. As a commissioned Flying Officer he always led his flight with great skill, determination and a fighting spirit, which was reflected in the high operational efficiency he maintained. He was an accomplished Spitfire, Hurricane and Typhoon pilot. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in may 1945 and Mentioned In Dispatches in January 1946. After the war he flew for Short Brothers and Harland Ferry Service. Cliff and Carmel immigrated to Canada with their children in 1957, settling in Sarnia. Here Cliff enjoyed a varied career of over 35 years in sales. His refuge was the cottage at Stag Island. At work and at play, his quick wit and great sense of humour earned Cliff many life long friends. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. William Doyle for his kind, attentive care given to Cliff over the years. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service followed by a reception in celebration of his life will be held at the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club, 500 Errol Road W., Sarnia, on Friday, October 23rd at 5:30 p.m. Sympathy may be expressed through memorial donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund, 286 N. Front St., Sarnia, N7T 5S7 or charity of your choice.
