It is with profound sadness that the family of Betty Danylchuk announces her passing in her 98th year. Betty was predeceased by her husband and soulmate, Bill, who passed away February 8, 2023. Betty will be forever missed by her daughters Debbie (Diane) and Karen, along with Brooke (Matt) and Drew, and Sawyer and Nicholas, children and grandchildren of Debbie and Diane.
Betty grew up in Toronto and attended Fern Avenue Public School and Parkdale Collegiate. Betty and Bill met in their last year of high school and were joined at the hip for the rest of their adventurous 78 years together. They continuously reflected on their memories of growing up in Toronto—days at Sunnyside Beach and Pool, dances at Palais Royale, and long bike rides outside the city. Given Betty’s interest in travel from an early age, it seemed appropriate that she and Bill were married in Costa Rica where Bill held a summer job in 1950. They began their married life together in Sarnia where they remained for the rest of their lives.
Betty and Bill were lifelong travellers having visited Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America, and South America, many of those travels with their daughters. They especially enjoyed Hong Kong where Karen taught for four years, and Perth, Australia where Debbie taught on a one-year exchange.
The Danylchuks joined the Sarnia Riding Club in 1963 and remained members ever since that time enjoying many years of swimming, tennis, beach lounging, and dances with a closely knit group of friends. Betty loved swimming laps in the pool and sitting on the hill overlooking the lake throughout the spring and summer.
Betty and Bill also spent many years as members of the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club, dining there regularly on Friday evenings and attending the special occasion brunches with the family. Betty played golf and curled at the club in the early 50s and 60s while Bill continued to play golf until his final year.
Betty was a beloved member of the Sigma Phi Gamma, Gamma Epsilon Chapter Sorority, having joined in 1955 and continued her involvement up until her passing. She cherished her many sorority sisters along with her bridge club friends she met in 1950. Betty volunteered throughout the years as a canvasser for various charitable organizations.
Betty relished her role as homemaker, devoted to her daughters and husband. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, kindness, compassion, keen interest in others, and zest for life. She was a true inspiration to those who knew and met her.
The family would like to thank the medical staff and volunteers at St. Joseph’s Hospice Sarnia-Lambton for their outstanding and compassionate care during our Mom’s final days. Special thanks to the nurses, personal support workers, Drs. Allison Crombeen and Orla MacSweeney, and Spiritual Care Coordinator Mike Burns. A celebration of life will follow in the future. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the St. Joseph’s Hospice Sarnia-Lambton (www.stjosephshospice.ca) or the Sarnia and District Humane Society (www.sarniahumanesociety.com).
