SCHEIERS, AUGUST (GUS) 1918-2010 - It is with sadness, yet many fond memories, we announce the passing of AUGUST (GUS) SCHEIERS on Sunday, January 24th, 2010 at Marshall Gowland Manor. Beloved and devoted husband of the late Mary Scheiers. Predeceased by sons Gus Jr. and Wayne and daugher-in-law, Liz. Survived by his son Gary and his wife, Bev, grandchildren Katie and her husband Kyle of Calgary, Alberta and Michael presently attending McMaster University in Hamilton. Also survived by his brother Steve of Welland, brother-in-law Dante DeLuca of Welland, and several nephews and nieces. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Gus was raised in Welland and then moved to Sarnia in 1938 to play football for the Sarnia Imperials. He played, coached and managed with great tenacity and dedication which led to his induction into the Sarnia Lambton Sports Hall of Fame, an honour he greatly appreciated. Gus served overseas in the Canadian Armed Services during WWII where he met many life long friends. A no-nonsense yet very fair man, Gus worked at Imperial Oil for 43 years. He was most proud of his career and thoroughly enjoyed the men and company he worked for. Gus spent his retirement happily golfing and curling with his wife at the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club and enjoying his grandchildren. A true lover of sports, a devoted husband, a wonderful father and a loving grandfather he will be missed. The family would like to thank Fairwinds Lodge, the doctors and nurses at Bluewater Health and especially the staff at Marshall Gowland Manor for their caring dedication in making Gus' last few months comfortable. At Gus' request, there will be no visitation. A graveside ceremony at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery will take place on Friday, January 29th, 2010 at 1:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made through donations to the Alzheimer's Society or a charity of choice (cheques only please). Arrangements entrusted to the D.J. ROBB FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE. Messages of condolence may be sent through djrobbfh@ebtech.net.
